Sahachar (Barleria prionitis):

Sahachar has shown anti-inflammatory, antiarthritic & immunomodulatory effects in various experimental studies.

B. Prionitis L. plant has traditional claim to have anti-inflammatory activity. In one experimental study, root extracts were screened for anti-inflammatory activity using caragennan induced rat paw edema at the dose of 200 & 400 mg/kg orally. The aqueous extract was found most active, it was then fractionated into four major fractions (FR) and were screened by the same tests. Result showed that, at a dose of 400mg/kg FR-III & IV showed significant (**P<0.01) with 50.64% & 55.76% inhibition of edema respectively at the end of 4 h. as compared with reference drug indomethacin (**P<0.01) with 60.25% inhibition of edema. Aqueous extracts fractions showed significant dose dependant anti-inflammatory activity in rat model.

In another experimental study, methanolic extract of Barleria prionitis Linn, for the dose of 500 mg/kg, p.o. showed anti-infl ammatory activity in the early stage as well as in the late stage (up to 180 min), & after that, the effect becomes similar to that of negative control.

Another study was designed to explore the comparative antiphlogistic potency of two species of Barleria namely B. cristata & B. prionitis against the well-known topical inflammogen croton oil which acts as a powerful topical irritant. The resulting test & standard solutions (40 il) were applied to right ear of female rats (n=5). Control group animals received only the irritant solvent while left ear of each group remained untreated. The author concluded that the extracts of both the species showing significant topical anti-inflammatory activity can be explored to formulate a good herbal topical preparation which will have low toxicity & better therapeutic index.

Barleria prionitis L. leaves were defatted by petroleum ether & then successive extraction was done with chloroform & methanol by the hot Soxhlet extraction method. Chloroform extract was further fractionated with solvent ethyl acetate to obtain EABP. This fraction was evaluated at two doses 125 & 250 mg/kg, against formaldehyde-induced acute non immunological & Freund's Complete Adjuvant-induced chronic immunological arthritis in rats. Arthritis assessment, paw volume, body weight, motor incoordination & nociceptive threshold were measured. Haematological assessments of red & white blood cells, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, as well as histopathological studies were also done on day 21, after animals were sacrificed. Dose dependent & significant inhibition of oedema was observed in both acute as well as chronic models, extract protects synovial membrane by improving the health status through haematinic parameters & exhibits promising anti-arthritic activity. This finding thus supports the traditional use of Barleria prionitis for rheumatism.

Dashmool:

Dashmool (dashmul, dashamula) is a ten roots compound to treat Vata dosha. The warming quality also pacifies Kapha. These ten roots are Bilva root (Aegle marmelos), Agnimantha root (Premna integrifolia), Shyonaka root (Oroxylum indicum), Patala root (Stereospermym suaveolens), Kashmari root (Gmelina arborea), Bruhati root (Solanumindicum), Kantakari root (Solanum xanthocarpum), Shalaparni root (Desmodium gangeticum), Prushniparni root (Uraria picta), Gokshura root (Tribulus terrestris). Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus):

Shatavari provides rejuvenating effect, anti-inflammatory effects and immunomoduatory effect. Shatavari is among Rasayana, the rejuvenator herbs which improves health by increasing immunity, vitality and resistance, imparting longevity as well as protection against stress. This herb is also mentioned as balya means a strength promoter.

ACE inhibited topical edema in the mouse ear, following administration at 200 mg/kg (i.p.), leading to substantial reductions in skin thickness and tissue weight, inflammatory cytokine production, neutrophil mediated myeloperoxidase activity, and various histopathological indicators. Furthermore, ACE was effective at reducing inflammatory damage induced by chronic TPA exposure and evoked a significant inhibition of vascular permeability induced by aceticacidinmice.

A. racemosus is also suggested for its soothing agent upon systemic dryness which is part of the natural aging process.

Intra-abdominal sepsis are major causes of mortality following trauma and bowel surgery. Photo of rheumatoid arthritis, sciatica, stiffness of thigh, muscle cramps Immunomodulating property of A. racemosus has been shown to protect the rat & mice against experimental induced abdominal sepsis. Oral administration of decoction of powdered root of A. racemosus has been reported to produce leucocytosis & predominant neutrophilia along with enhanced phagocytic activity of the macrophages & polymorphs. Percentage mortality of A. racemosus treated animals was found to be significantly reduced while survival rate was comparable to that of the group treated with a combination of metronidazole & gentamicin. Since A. racemosus is reported to be devoid of antibacterial action, so protection offered by A. racemosus against sepsis by altering function of macrophages, indicates its possible immuno-modulatory property. Further, oral administration of total extract of A. racemosus has been shown to reduce all the three attributes of adhesions viz number, character & area markedly in an animal model of intraperitoneal adhesions. It has reported the revival of macrophage chemotaxis & interleukin-l (IL-I) and tumor necrosis factor a(TNFa) production by the oral treatment of A. racemosus root extract in ochratoxin A treated mice.

Alcoholic extract has been found to enhance both, humoral and cell mediated immunity of albino mice injected with sheep red blood cells as particulate antigen.
